»Culture«

  • This week we dove into the subject of Vietnamese wedding traditions
  • A wedding consists of three parts: the grooms house, the bride’s house, and the reception.
    > At the groom’s house, an odd number of men carry trays bearing gifts to exchange to the same number of women.
    > The tea/wine ceremony begins with the groom’s family gives the bride’s family a sip of wine. By accepting the wine, the bride’s family is agreeing to admit the groom’s party.
    > The groom’s mother always gives the bride jewelry as a gift of prosperity.
    > At the reception held at night, the happy couple go to each table to accept wedding gifts, cards, and money.
    > Gifts given are typically $50-$500.

DANG GIRLLLL! YO COFFEE SMELLS PHO-RESH!

Word of the Day: cà phê (coffee)

The world’s most expensive coffee is made in Vietnam and is called cà phê Chồn (pronounced ca fay choum). It retails for $160 and is highly revered as one of the most delicious coffees in the world. The catch is that the berries were previously eaten by a weasel and “let out” *wink*

- Mary Vuong

P.S. The Vietnamese community is very present in the nails industry. It is essential to know the toxic chemicals those who work at nail salons endure on a daily basis in order to raise enough money to support themselves and their families. Take time out of your schedule to come out to UF KPL’S Poisonous Polish Forum Wednesday (03/14) at 7:30PM to 9:30PM in Little 221. (FB Event: click here)

SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS!

Word of the Day: rượu rắn (Snake Wine)

Try having this for your 21st birthday. *wink* Whole cobras are infused in rice wine in a beverage called rượu rắn (pronounced roooo rang). It is known to improve health and male virility. The guest of honor usually has a shot of rượu rắn along with the whole beating snake heart.

Word of the Day: thuốc (medicine)
The seasons are changing so don’t get yourself sick! If you’re Vietnamese, you have got to know the weird traditional treatments our families suggest to get rid of something like a simple cold.
If you’re coughing, aching, or just in a bad mood, Vietnamese people suggest rubbing dău (oil, specifically green oil) over the place that is causing you to be sick.
You think that’s weird? Viet people get intense!
My mom and grandma would always make me cao gio, which is when you rub dău over your chest and back then take a spoon or coin to…carve the affected areas. The results leave your chest/back with markings that are supposed to pull out the “wind” to the surface of our bodies and create a way for it to escape our bodies.
That sound bad? How about fire cupping? It’s purpose is to do the same thing as cao gio, but you use fire and jars that are pressed on to your back which then causes the skin on your back to puff out (grossed out?). Afterwards, the jars are removed leaving you with circular marks to allow your “wind” to leave.
So take your vitamins, eat plenty, stay hydrated, and get rest!
